The Empire State Building, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper. Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon and completed in 1931. The building has a roof height of 1,250 feet (380 m), with a total height of 1,454 feet (443.2 m), including antenna. The name comes from the New York nickname, “Empire City.” The Empire State Building stood for almost 40 years as the world’s tallest building before the North Tower of the World Trade Center was constructed in Lower Manhattan in late 1970. It was again the tallest building in New York City after the September 11 attacks in 2001, before the new One World Trade Center in 2012 surpassed it. As of 2019, the building is New York City’s seventh-highest building, the sixth-highest completed skyscraper in the United States and the 45th-highest in the world. It is also America’s sixth-tallest freestanding building.

The lobby at Fifth Avenue is one of the few interiors in New York that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has identified as a historic landmark. In 2009, 18 months were spent restoring its appearance to the original 1930 style-constructing the entire building just took 13 months!
Highlights of the lobby include the Art Deco influenced ceiling walls — in a tribute to the mechanical era, planets and stars are made as assembly lines of gears, brought back to life in 24-karat gold and aluminum leaf — and on the wall above the reception desk in the Fifth Avenue lobby is one of New York City’s most popular pictures, a depiction of the building itself with radiating light beams. The landmarked lobby is now the final to encounter the Empire State Building. The new guest entrance on 34th Street opened in 2018.

Being the world’s most prominent observatory, the 86th Floor was the backdrop for hundreds of movie and TV scenes, as well as tens of millions of memorable personal moments.
