Central Park East I is a little East Harlem public elementary school. They have a proud tradition of progressive and historical practices.
Every week all of their school starts singing as a group together. They believe that they encourage children to take chances and choose. They go to play and learn from their students outside. Practical preparation takes place every day. Families are popular and important to their work.
History
Central Park East 1 was founded by teachers with strong beliefs about education and community in 1974. CPE1 soon became a standard in public schools of progressive education. Worldwide educators keep visiting in order to learn our activities and design.
Central Park East 1 has preserved its deep roots in East Harlem. Children today go to school in the same neighborhood as CPE1, from pre-kids to fifth grades. The school has illustrated integrated curricula throughout its existence. Their curricula are focused on the unique curiosity and interests of children, comprehensive opportunities in the visual and performing arts, the involvement of parents, cross-age groupings and the continuous study of education practice. Children grow socially, physically and mentally through rich interactions with materials and the world outside school.
When CPE1 started, many schools told families that English is the only language to speak at home, and many schools segregated disabled children from their counterparts. Early on, CPE1 teachers wrote and spoke Spanish in a classroom; it was difficult for the school to understand the specific strengths of each child. CPE1 continues to believe that the homes of children are relevant today. The teacher, child and family work together for each child to learn. Another explanation why CPE1 continues to be a significant function so many educators know so well.
Philosophy
Central Park East 1 claims that it does an effective job. Staff and children are mutually dependent to be increasing and profitable. They believe in independence and individual choice and they believe that we are all responsible for one another.
Classrooms are designed to guide and assist children in their choice and independence. Every day, kids pick the tasks, the tools they use and the great ideas they pursue. Kids learn more from themselves, their families and their surroundings.
In the growth of group life at CPE1, rituals and routines play an important role. The entire school group also gathers to debate, to sing and to celebrate. Each class produces their own daily snack. Younger children eat in their classrooms, on real plates, in warm conversation, fresh air and physical activity are everyday aspects of the CPE1. Extra recess time, daily Central Park walks and weekly skating get the children going.
